Inmitten gesellschaftlicher Spannungen und parallel zu den Landtagswahlen in Thüringen rief Genius Loci Weimar zu einer bewussten Erinnerungskultur auf. Das Festival wollte der dominierenden Machtarchitektur des DDR-Mahnmals mit eindringlichen Lichtinstallationen begegnen und dabei das Individuum in den Mittelpunkt rücken. In einem künstlerischen Rundgang durch die Mahnmalanlage entstand eine eindrucksvolle Auseinandersetzung mit Geschichte, Gegenwart und Verantwortung.
mammasONica eröffnete den Rundgang durch das Mahnmal mit der Installation Ghostpoets an den sieben Reliefstelen, die die Lagergeschichte aus der Perspektive der DDR erzählen. Als stumme Zeugen stehen die Stelen für die Unmenschlichkeit der Vergangenheit und die Unverwüstlichkeit des menschlichen Geistes – der Ausgangspunkt der Arbeit. Die immersive Licht- und Klanginstallation verwandelte die Stelen in einen emotionalen Resonanzraum zwischen Trauma und Heilung und bot Raum für Reflexion und kollektive Erneuerung.
Entlang der Straße der Nationen inszenierten die Area Composer mit EMPATHY eine fließende Bild- und Klanglandschaft, die den Fokus vom Monument auf das Individuum lenkte. Die Arbeit diente als Appell an Pluralität, Empathie und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung. Die Installation transformierte die entmenschlichte Straße der Nationen zu einem menschlichen Schicksalsweg.
Den dramaturgischen Schlusspunkt setzte Die Stille von Marina Konther und Etienne Martin am Glockenturm. In einer poetisch-sinnlichen Annäherung an das gleichnamige Rilke-Gedicht entstand ein Spannungsfeld zwischen Lärm und Liebe, Krieg und Intimität. Traditionelle Animationen, kombiniert mit abstrakten und figurativen Bildern sowie eine spezielle Soundkulisse trugen zur Eindringlichkeit der Arbeit bei.
Mit Genius Loci Weimar 2024 wurde ein Ort wie Buchenwald erstmals zum Schauplatz zeitgenössischer Medienkunst. Eine große Herausforderung, der sich Festival und Künstler:innen mit bemerkenswerter Sensibilität und Verantwortung stellten. Die Resonanz war überwältigend: Über 50.000 Besucher:innen setzten sich intensiv mit der Geschichte und den künstlerischen Arbeiten auseinander. Darüber hinaus zog das Festival überregionale und internationale Aufmerksamkeit auf sich – in der Presse ebenso wie in der Kunstszene. So entstand ein Leuchten, das weit über den Ettersberg hinausstrahlte.
The 11th edition of the videomapping and light art festival Genius Loci Weimar made a powerful statement in 2024: from August 30 to September 1, the Buchenwald Memorial—prominently located on the Ettersberg near Weimar, Thuringia—became a site for audiovisual reflection. The choice of location and the festival’s theme, “It feels like 5 to ’33,” delivered an unmistakable message in light of the current political climate.
Amid rising social tensions and paralleling the state elections in Thuringia, Genius Loci Weimar called for a conscious culture of remembrance. The festival sought to respond to the dominant architectural language of the GDR-era memorial with evocative light installations, placing the individual at the center. Through an artistic journey across the memorial grounds, visitors were compelled to engage deeply with history, responsibility, and the present.

mammasONica opened the tour of the memorial with Ghostpoets, an installation at the seven relief steles that narrate the camp’s history from the perspective of the former East German regime. As silent witnesses, the steles symbolize both the inhumanity of the past and the indestructibility of the human spirit, which formed the basis of the artwork. The immersive light and sound installation transformed the steles into a space of emotional resonance between trauma and healing, offering room for reflection and collective renewal.
Along the Street of Nations, the Area Composer presented EMPATHY, a flowing landscape of image and sound that shifted the focus from the monument to the individual. The work served as a call for pluralism, empathy, and civic responsibility, transforming the dehumanized Street of Nations into a pathway of human fate.
The dramaturgical conclusion of the artistic tour came with Die Stille (The Silence) by Marina Konther and Etienne Martin at the bell tower. They took a poetic and sensuous approach to the Rilke poem of the same name, which resulted in a liminal space between noise and love, war and intimacy. Traditional animation, abstract and figurative imagery, and a custom soundscape heightened the emotional force of the piece.
Genius Loci Weimar 2024 marked the first time that the Buchenwald Memorial, and any site of this kind, served as a site for contemporary media art—a profound challenge that both the festival and the participating artists met with remarkable sensitivity and a deep sense of responsibility. The response was overwhelming: over 50,000 visitors engaged deeply with both the history and the artworks. The festival also attracted national and international attention from the media and art world alike. The light created during those days shone far beyond the Ettersberg.
