Independent Space Index 2025 invites you to explore the diversity of Vienna’s independent art spaces during this citywide open-house weekend. All participating spaces will be open daily from 2 to 6 PM throughout the festival weekend, allowing visitors to experience the exhibitions collectively and without prior registration. In addition, a daily talk titled „Mapping the Scene“ will be held at 12 PM in collaboration with Kunsthalle Vienna, followed by a guided tour to selected spaces. The talks and tours will be conducted in English.
Why you should visit Independent Space Index 2025?
The long weekend at the end of May offers an opportunity to experience Vienna’s vibrant independent art scene in an accessible and uncomplicated way. Opening nights and special events allow the public to meet the artists in person and gain insights into their working methods. Independent art spaces play a crucial role in supporting artists at key stages of their careers and provide a platform for experimentation and innovation.
Daily Art Talks in collaboration with Kunsthalle Vienna
During the Independent Space Index, art talks with selected dialogue partners will take place daily at lunchtime, titled „Mapping the Scene“ at Kunsthalle Vienna Karlsplatz. Afterwards, the public is cordially invited to take part in guided tours through selected art spaces. The talks and tours will be conducted in English. Guided Tour on Sunday
In addition to the tours that start at the Kunsthalle Vienna Karlsplatz, there will also be a tour through the 2nd district on Sunday, 1 June. This walk offers exciting insights into the history of Leopoldstatt and the participating art spaces of the Independent Space Index: hoast, Loggia, philomena+, flucc and Kunstraum am Schauplatz. On the tour together, we will not only discover the participating locations, but also the surrounding neighbourhood with historical sites such as the Karmelitermarkt, the Augarten and Admiral Tegetthoff. In the exhibition spaces, we will be welcomed by hosts, curators and artists who will introduce us to their current exhibitions. The tour will conclude with a performance by Andy Guhl and Albert Mayr at our last stop. The Independent Space Index network is organized by volunteers and thrives on community involvement. Every year, a small team takes over the organisation of the festival, while the format is developed collectively and changes with each edition.
