With Closed Eyes Cinema, film director and sound artist Ganaël Dumreicher delves into cinema at the very thresholds of its material visibility.
Central to the exhibition are two animated films explicitly conceived to be experienced with closed eyes. When situated in front of the bright LED screens, the interplay of light, color, shadow and sound creates audiovisual narratives that manifest more clearly through the closed eyelid than to the naked eye.
The screens thus become projectors, and the eyelids become cinema screens. Viewers no longer merely sit in front of the image, but find themselves inhabiting it. As the eyes close, the projections from the screens merge with subjective images drawn from memory and imagination.
Here, sound acts as a structural material. An acoustic collage of field recordings, synthesized audio, and found footage opens up a space between abstraction and concrete narrative, offering subtle cues for orientation; listening one’s way through pulsing light.
Closed Eyes Cinema is an invitation to let go of the gaze and give oneself over to the films.
