The artistic work at Toihaus takes place in a variety of formats and at different locations. It ranges from performances at various venues to lectures and workshops, as well as collaborations with educational institutions and art spaces. In addition, the Toihaus is open to new collaborations, exchange programs, and inspiring encounters.
Among the people who shape this theatre are the choreographers Cornelia Böhnisch and Katharina Schrott. Material choreography is at the heart of their artistic work. In their performances, materials are not viewed as mere props, but as independent partners of dance and music. Together, they form equal planes, and their interplay continually gives rise to new spaces of movement and perception.
At Toihaus, their approach opens a path to art that transcends linguistic and generational boundaries. “Bringing generations together is achieved by finding a form of expression that is both sophisticated and accessible, free from codes and words,” says Böhnisch. This approach can be experienced firsthand in their performances for all age groups: They invite the audience to engage all their senses, immerse themselves in movement and materials, and experience art physically.

The Toihaus is a place for contemporary art, where an international and transdisciplinary team brings together the various fields of dance, music and visual arts in a poetic connection. The Toihaus stage is used for various formats and offers space up to 60 people depending on the setting. Several productions are developed each year, which are shown in Salzburg and also go on tour worldwide. Performances are offered at different times to reach an age-diverse audience.
Art education at Toihaus takes place on several levels: workshops, collaborations with educational institutions and art spaces, and guest performances in toddler groups, kindergartens, and theatres show the diversity of the Toihaus program. The Toihaus also offers the independent theatre scene space for rehearsals and performances and is always open to new collaborations and points of contact.
Since 2007, Toihaus has been organising the biennial festival BimBam, where international performances for young children are presented to an ever-growing audience in Salzburg. The high-quality programme is presented at various venues across the city and province of Salzburg as well as in neighbouring provinces. Toihaus is also internationally active, presenting its productions at festivals and venues around the world and collaborating with international artists and partners.
