Diese war in erster Linie als Werbeplattform gedacht, man konnte sich über die Angebote der Bank informieren und im Internet surfen. 2013 folgte die Nutzung der Box für diverse Veranstaltungen und über den Sommer 2014 die Widmung zur nun namentlichen MQ Art Box.
Mit der Kuratorin Elisabeth Melichar wurde sie zum Aushängeschild der Galerie Smolka Contemporary. Seit Dezember 2014 zeigten viele etablierte, zeitgenössische, österreichische Künstler*innen ihre Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Ausstellungsfläche, darunter Brigitte Kowanz, Eva Schlegel, Daniel Spoerri, Deborah Sengl, Hanakam & Schuller uvm. Im herausfordernden Jahr 2020 übernahm schließlich das MuseumsQuartier Wien die kuratorische Organisation der MQ Art Box mit dem Ziel, der jungen heimischen Szene eine Plattform zu bieten – prominente 36 Quadratmeter in einem der größten Kulturareale der Welt.
English. MQ Art Box. Nine by four meters
A concrete base, four glass walls and a substantial yellow roof construction: this is how the Viennese architectural practice BEHF designed the »Yellow Box« in the summer of 2011 – a project by Raiffeisenlandesbank NÖ-Wien, who were the main sponsor of the MuseumsQuartier Vienna at the time. It began with having the intention to function as an advertising platform where you could find out about the bank’s offers and surf the internet. In 2013, the box started to be used for various events and, over the summer of 2014, the space was dedicated to what we now know to be the MQ Art Box. Under the curation of Elisabeth Melichar, it became the figurehead of Smolka Contemporary gallery. Since December 2014, many established contemporary Austrian artists have shown their engagement with this exhibition space, including Brigitte Kowanz, Eva Schlegel, Daniel Spoerri, Deborah Sengl, Hanakam & Schuller and many more. In the challenging year of 2020, MuseumsQuartier Vienna finally took over the curatorial organization of the MQ Art Box with the aim of offering the young local scene a platform – a prominent 36 square meters in one of the largest cultural areas in the world.
